Stephanie J. Block, Megan Hilty, Marc Kudisch, and Allison Janney star in the new musical 9 to 5, based on the film of the same name. The production is directed by Joe Mantello, with choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler.
This all-new musical comedy about friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era centers on a trio of office workers who turn the tables on their sexist and egotistical boss. The show features a book by Patricia Resnick, co-author of the film's screenplay, and a score by Grammy Award winner Dolly Parton, who penned the film's hit title song, as well as 18 original numbers that mix Broadway and pop with her signature witty lyrics.
Two hours prior to each performance of 9 To 5: The Musical, 38 tickets will be sold by lottery at $36.50 per ticket. These tickets must be purchased with cash and there is a limit of two tickets per person. Lottery entries will commence two hours prior to each show at the Marriott Marquis Theatre Box Office with the drawing taking place 90 minutes to curtain time.

I brought my family to the tkts booth to buy discount tickets, in hopes of getting in the heights or phantom. We ended up seeing 9 to 5, and at first I was disappointed, but from the minute the curtain went up these feelings disappeared. This musical was just flat out hilarious, delivered by a talented cast of renowned performers. Allison Janney delivered an excellent performance as an uptight but deeply sympathetic secretary named violet, using great comic timing and stage presence to dominate her performance. Her vocals were the weakest of the three women, but the audience got past this as it fit her character and was overpowered by her acting skills. Megan Hilty played the hilarious southern bell Doralee with excellent character development, and allowed the audience to just truly fall in love with her. And finally, Stephanie J. Block played the nervous and naieve Judy with excellent progression, allowing the audience to truly take the journey from the shy girl in act 1, to the powerhouse woman in act 2. She truly shines in "Get Out and Stay Out." All three women really made the show memorable. Anyone looking to just sit back, laugh, and have a great time, 9 to 5 is for you!

Being a huge fan of the original movie, I was beyond ecstatic when I heard that they were bringing it to Broadway and they definitely brought it in a diverse way. Like the film, the musical is set in 1979 and it is an all out comedy, Judy Block, Doralee Hilty and Violet Janney, the three office workers who were "just a step on the boss man’s ladder," in my opinion came to life on Broadway. Though not a particularly challenging story, “9 to 5” is an uplifting tale of “girl-power” and ultimately womens rights. But due to its cheery, happy-ending nature, it translates pretty effectively to the stage and the show is as over the top as you would expect from a theatre extravaganza with Parton at the helm.
For what its worth, “9 to 5” is an enjoyable musical theatre experience. This isnt a Broadway ground-breaker by any means, but it is a fun and a happy-go-lucky feel-good musical, Ill be the first to admit that my primary reason for seeing this Musical was for Allison Janney Violet. Janney, by the way, is utterly hilarious both because shes an incredible actor most people know her from "The West Wing," but she was Junos mother in the movie “Juno” and also the guidance counselor-cum-erotica author in "10 Things I Hate About You" but also because her singing is...a bit weak, nevertheless her comedic timing and Dolly Parton’s songwriting abilities, she pulls it off beautifully. I recommend this Musical to anyone who ever wanted to get even with the boss and for the most part do not care about the dire consequences. You wont enjoy yourself if you give it too much thought. A really great evenings entertainment, great acting, great singing, great dancing and lots of energy and fun. The cast obviously gel together perfectly and their enthusiasm and chemistry really comes through. Go in with a frown, maybe but you wont come out with one.
I thought it was amazing! It was funny, the music was great, and the casting was very well done. It was quite similar to the movie, but with dancing. Excellent show.
